discuss | edit | tell a friend |

Art description:
"The Life of Jesus" is an illustrated book with humorous intent depicting Jesus as ...a binge-drinking friend of Jimi Hendrix and naked surfer high on cannabis.

Incident:
Gerhard Haderer Austrian author and cartoon artist was sentence to sex months in prison for his book "The Life of Jesus" by a Greek Court. The trial was initiated when the Greek Orthodox Church complained about the cartoons to be insulting to religion. Haderer was tried alongside his Greek publisher, Mr. Chatzopoulos, of Oxy Publishing, and four booksellers, on charges of blasphemy. The trial started in December 2003, and concluded on 18 January 2005 with the conviction of Haderer and the acquittal of the publisher and booksellers. Haderer will face the imprisonment if he enters the country.

Current status:
"It is unbelievable that a person can write a book in his home country and be condemned and threatened with imprisonment by another," said Nikki Conrad, a human rights expert. "But he is not going to just sit back and accept this injustice"

15th of April 2005 the appeals court overturned the conviction for blasphemy. This is great news and a victory for freedom of expression.

"He has been cleared and the book is no longer banned," Haderer's lawyer, Maria Marazioti, said.

Opposed by: Greek Orthodox Church and a Greek Court
